After months of working with the community on new and exciting arrangements, Music Assistant is ready to take center stage once again. Today, we’re thrilled to present… drum roll 🥁… version 2.8!

Since our last major update, the team has been listening to your feedback, squashing bugs, and building features that bridge the gap between different audio ecosystems. Today, we’re releasing key changes to make your home audio smarter, more social, and more unified than ever before. This release is a testament to our community’s passion, and we can’t wait for you to hear what’s queued up.

On that note, the State of the Open Home 2026 is just around the corner, and this year it’s going live 🎉. On April 8, 2026, the community will gather in Utrecht, the Netherlands, to celebrate what we’ve built, share successes, and look to what’s ahead. Join our audience and you may just get to see Sendspin (more on that below) in action too 👀. Grab your tickets here and secure your spot today.

”All Together Now”

Merge your players

What happens when AirPlay, Chromecast, and DLNA walk into a high-end soundbar? Before, chaos. Up until today, Music Assistant treated these protocols as three different speakers: it was messy, crowded, and made your Home Assistant dashboard look like a cacophony of controls.

But that was then, and this is now. In version 2.8, we move from clutter to clarity with Player Merging. Marcel has implemented some sophisticated <del>logic</del> magic 🪄 that identifies when multiple protocols (for example, Airplay and DLNA) belong to the same physical speaker. The result is you’ll only see one player in your dashboard. Simply pick the speakers you want to use, put them in a group, and Music Assistant handles the rest behind the scenes.

It’s worth noting that because we’re fundamentally reworking how players are identified, this is a “breaking change” for Home Assistant users. In other words, you might need to reconfigure some of your Player Groups or Home Assistant automations. But trust me, once you see your clean list of players all in sync, you’ll never look back!

”Moving On Up”

Sendspin’s on a roll

This iteration marks a major milestone for Sendspin, our new multimedia streaming and synchronizing protocol that’s been building momentum since its debut. Sendspin is open source, free to use, and can seamlessly stream high-fidelity audio, album art, and visualizer data to all your home devices. When we released the tech preview for Sendspin in version 2.7, we invited all developers and DIY audio hobbyists into the mix to help us build and test in the open…

And the collaboration was a hit. With your input, we’ve been able to make major progress: the specification is nearly complete, implementations are almost finished, and an ecosystem of Sendspin-compliant clients has emerged. Version 2.8 showcases this evolution with significant performance and quality improvements, bringing Sendspin closer to graduation from preview status.

Sendspin is moving on up, but before we hit the chorus, a little moment for the bridge…

”Take It To The Bridge”

Smooth streaming

This is the one we’ve all been waiting for. Before this release, if you wanted to group a Sonos speaker with a Google Nest (via Chromecast), you were out of luck.

In 2.8, we’ve introduced Sendspin Bridges, which “wraps” Sendspin around your existing Chromecast and AirPlay-capable devices (such as Sonos). By turning these devices into Sendspin players, Music Assistant can now treat them as one big, happy family. You can finally create a Sendspin Group that mixes and matches brands, keeping them in perfect sync. Your Sonos in the lounge and your Chromecast in the kitchen are finally on the same team!

”Rock DJ”

Party mode, now built in

Tired of your friends hovering over your shoulder to ask, “Can you play some 90s Eurodance?” We’ve got you. Or rather, @apophisnow’s got you!

Enter the Party! You can now turn any screen into a party dashboard for any player. Your guests simply scan a QR code with their phones, and boom, they’re in a sleek, “guest-only” version of the Music Assistant interface. No app downloads, no logins, and – most importantly – no sharing your Wi-Fi password. They can search your library, add tracks to the queue, and even use credits to “boost” songs to the top. You stay in control; they get to be the DJ.

And we didn’t stop at the queue. Karaoke Mode is now built directly into the dashboard. When enabled, the Party Plugin dashboard can display full-screen lyrics, highlighting each line as it plays. Time to get out those mics and start singing – or let your guests take the spotlight 😉.

”The Choice is Yours”

Explore by mood

Until now, finding music in your library meant searching for a specific artist or album. But as we all know, music isn’t always about names, it’s about a vibe. In 2.8, @jozefKruszynski has contributed Genre Support to make choosing music for a mood a whole lot easier.

Instead of trawling through an endless list of artists, you can now play music from a specific genre with a single click. Want to turn your living room into a jazz lounge? Just hit “play” on the Genres page, and Music Assistant will curate a collection of tracks, helping you find an ambiance that’s just right.

”Unstoppable”

Music Assistant in motion

In addition to our core features, 2.8 introduces a wave of new player providers, music sources and plugins to expand your musical horizons:

Several player providers have been added, such as HEOS and Dashie Kiosk

New music sources like Bandcamp, YouSee Musik, Emby Music, NFS Fileshare, SomaFM Radio, ORF Radiothek, Yandex Music, Zvuk Music, and Kion Music can now be added to enrich your music library

The new AriaCast plugin allows you to use AriaCast with Music Assistant

Airplay 2 now supports password pairing

There is now a dedicated “Background Tasks” section in the settings that shows you which tasks are running in the background. It also allows you to schedule tasks at a specific time, so that your favourite daily podcast is ready when you sit down for your morning coffee.

It’s been a busy few months composing behind the scenes, building up to a massive crescendo. Today, the beat finally drops on Music Assistant’s biggest update yet. With version 2.7, Music Assistant is getting all jazzed up with a visual overhaul, a chart-topping lineup of new features and providers, along with a brand-new streaming protocol we’re spinning up ourselves.

Of course, you can always update and experience all the great new stuff without reading the rest of this, but you might miss a deep cut. In fact, we can’t even cover everything in this blog (there really is that much), so go sing your praises for anything we missed in the comments!

”With a Little Help from My Friends”

Marvin joins the team

Music Assistant has gained its first full-time employee at the Open Home Foundation. No, not me! My day job is leading the Ecosystems department at the foundation (which comprises all the software projects the Foundation has that are not Home Assistant itself). Marvin will be joining the foundation in the new year to work full-time on Music Assistant, leading the project’s day-to-day operations. Marvin has been contributing to the project for three years now, working on all sorts of parts of the project, and specifically with the Apple Music and YouTube providers.

Not to worry, I’m pretty obsessed with my audio setup and will still be tinkering on my little pet project 😁.

”Everything in Its Right Place”

A visual overhaul

    A well deserved visual refresh

Music Assistant joining the foundation has given us a lot more than a nice open home; it’s given the project clearer direction and some expert help. One area some people felt Music Assistant fell short was its UI and UX, and in version 2.7, we’re starting the process of giving it a major overhaul, making it look as good as your music sounds!

This is just the beginning of a big process, so expect every update to bring more polish. The first thing you’ll probably notice is the collapsible navbar on the left of the screen, which looks pretty familiar to another Assistant 😉. Now it’s much more intuitive, especially for new users. The settings page has also been made much easier to navigate with breadcrumbs.

The biggest star of the show is the new Built-in Player, which lets you listen to music on the browser you’re using to hunt for your next track. Great for double-checking if the next song is family-friendly before sending it to every speaker in the home.

”Bulletproof”

Users and logins

User profiles for the whole family!

A lot of new features we’ve implemented wouldn’t be possible without some form of login and authentication. It was a much-requested feature, as security even within your home shouldn’t be ignored. We know logging in every once in a while can be a minor inconvenience, but we’ve tried to make it as unobtrusive as possible, even implementing a way to use your Home Assistant login as a “Single Sign-On”.

You can now have different user profiles with their own music providers. No more having four Tidal accounts all sitting next to each other, cluttering up the Playlists tab. You can even assign who has access to each speaker; say goodbye to the kids playing Demon Hunters on your office speaker during your performance review 😅. In Settings, just head to the User Management section, where you can add and edit your new users.

”Around the world”

Remote music streaming

No matter where, no matter when

One feature made possible with our new login interface is remote music streaming – yes, that’s correct, Music Assistant anywhere you can connect to the internet. We’ve created a new web app that allows for remote connections while you’re out and about.

It uses Home Assistant Cloud’s built-in multimedia streaming capabilities (WebRTC) to help route the audio from your Music Assistant server to wherever you are. A Home Assistant Cloud subscription is not required to use this feature; a big shoutout to Nabu Casa for providing their infrastructure for free to our users. Home Assistant Cloud subscribers get access to even more powerful routing, which improves streaming in more places. This subscription also supports the full-time development of Music Assistant 🙏.

This connection is peer-to-peer and end-to-end encrypted, meaning no one will know if you’re listening to ABBA 😊. I wouldn’t say it’s ready to replace your current music streaming service, but it’s a great way to get your FLACs playing at a friend’s house. You could even open two instances of the web app and stream it to two devices, and they’ll be synchronized… but how is that even possible?

”Spin me right round”

Introducing Sendspin

For some time, the Music Assistant team has been looking for the best way to stream audio, album art, and other music visualizations to the devices we have around our homes. There are a couple of projects out there doing cool stuff with streaming audio, but not any that fit our needs. So, when it doesn’t exist, it’s time to start building.

Introducing Sendspin, a new multimedia streaming and synchronizing protocol. It’s fully open source and free to use. Sendspin can stream high-fidelity audio, album art, and visualizer data, automatically adapting to each device’s capabilities. Imagine an e-paper display showcasing the album cover, while multiple speakers play in sync, and smart lights pulse to the rhythm.

The best way to use it right now is either via your browser or a Home Assistant Voice Preview Edition running beta firmware. We’ve built the experimental ability to use Sendspin on Google Cast-capable speakers (we’re also looking to do the same with AirPlay-capable speakers), which will allow Sendspin to work with a lot of different hardware.

A big thanks to Maxim and Kevin at the Open Home Foundation, who have been instrumental in making Sendspin a reality. Even though it can do some impressive stuff today, it’s very much a tech preview, and this announcement is our call to all developers and DIY audio hobbyists – we need your help building and testing this. This is the spec, start building with it!

All the best things in life are meant to be shared, and your music should be as free and open as the software we love. So spin that record 💿, drop the needle, and send that music across your entire home.

”Aeroplane”

AirPlay additions

We recently added support for external audio sources, the first being Spotify Connect. This allows you to stream audio from the Spotify app to your Music Assistant server, which could send it across all your speakers, even if they don’t support Spotify Connect. We’ve now added the ability to send AirPlay audio to Music Assistant, which you can then send anywhere in your home.

We also now support AirPlay 2 speakers as a player provider, which means perfectly synced audio across all your AirPlay 2-capable speakers, like HomePods. We recommend reading the limitations in the documentation, as not all AirPlay 2 devices are made equal 🤦‍♂️.

”Sing”

Lyrics support

    It's time for karaoke!

Never again be left guessing what Kurt is saying in Smells Like Teen Spirit. As of Music Assistant 2.6, you can now see the lyrics of the song you’re playing. If the lyrics provider supports it, there is the ability to have these words time-synced, making it more like karaoke. Lyrics can be found when you open the queue menu and it will be in the “lyrics” tab (this tab will only appear if the track name, artist and album are matched to the lyrics providers). We started with support of LRCLIB, but have since added Tidal lyric syncing, Genius lyrics, and local LRC files.

”Smooth operator”

Smart fading

    Making your playlists seamless

Music Assistant is now your personal in-house DJ, perfectly blending one song into the next, and unlike a DJ it always takes your requests 😎. This latest update adds Smart fading, which takes into account the BPM of each song, to make crossfading between songs sound more natural. To turn it on, go to your player of choice, scroll down to the Audio section, and choose “Enable Smart Fades”.

”All the small things”

And much more

None of these updates are small things, but I’m running out of space, so here is the rest of the hot 100:

There are now DSP presets that allow you to quickly save and apply custom configurations.

Track and share your listening history, with the addition of scrobbling, with support for LastFM, ListenBrainz, and Subsonic.

Several new player providers have been added, including Yamaha MusicCast, and Roku devices running Media Assistant.

Added VBAN as a new input provider.

New radio and podcast providers include Radio Paradise, Podcast Index, BBC Sounds, gPodder, iTunes Podcasts, Dl.fm, and ARD Audiothek.

Can’t follow Phish on tour? Luckily, the new Phish.in provider has you covered. There’s also Nugs.net if you’re looking for more live music.

Another cool hodgepodge of audio is the Internet Archive, which can now be added as a provider.

One of Japan’s biggest streaming platforms Niconico has been added as an audio provider ㊗️.

”Rebel yell”

Join the audio revolution

Music Assistant is also cast compatible!

Your music, your players – it’s time to take back control of your music and the devices you want to play it on. If you're unfamiliar with Music Assistant, it allows you to merge your libraries from leading audio streaming providers and local files, letting you play them on the most popular smart speakers. Since our last update, Music Assistant has had a couple of big releases, but our most recent might just be our platinum record 💿, with a lot of new functionality coming in version 2.4.

Over the past several months, Music Assistant has been hitting all the right notes with new features, greater stability, and a crescendo of contributors who keep pushing the project forward. If you’re unfamiliar with Music Assistant, it allows you to merge your libraries from leading audio streaming providers and local files, letting you play them on the most popular smart speakers. Since our last update, Music Assistant has had a couple of big releases, but our most recent might just be our platinum record 💿, with a lot of new functionality coming in version 2.4. In case you’ve missed the last few updates, here are the biggest additions.

Table of contents

Optimized for Assist

External audio & Spotify Connect

Podcasts & Audiobooks

More players and providers

Equalizer control & features

Home Assistant improvements

More stable streaming

Get Music Assistant 2.4 today!

”Say My Name”

Optimized for Assist

We should have called it Hi-Fi edition

The most recent release has some great advancements for Assist devices, like the Home Assistant Voice Preview Edition. We’ve been working closely with the ESPHome team to ensure the most optimal audio streaming experience, which has helped make Assist devices into very capable media players. The community has even added some great functionality to fully control your media player with your voice, including choosing songs, artists, and more. Voice Preview Edition has a high-quality DAC that provides very clean audio playback from its 3.5mm jack, allowing you to stream lossless audio to connected speakers (this $59 device puts some of my expensive Hi-Fi gear to shame!).

”Across the Universe”

External audio & Spotify Connect

Spotify Connect on Voice Preview Edition

Another feature in the latest release is support for “external audio sources”, which can be provided either by players themselves (source control) or with plugins. The first plugin to deliver this functionality is Spotify Connect. It’s the easiest way to use Spotify with Music Assistant, and can be enabled on any player. This makes any Music Assistant supported device a Spotify Connect supported device (can confirm, Voice Preview Edition is great for this). To get started go to Music Assistant’s settings, add the Spotify Connect Plugin, choose the devices you would like it to use, and within Spotify you will see the device as a player. Just note, Spotify Connect requires a Premium account to work.

We’ve got our sights set on adding even more plugins like this down the line (AirPlay, anyone?). We’re also hard at work making the whole setup process super simple, particularly for those using the Voice Preview Edition who might not need every single Music Assistant feature, but still want this simple casting capability.

”Radio Ga Ga”

Podcasts & Audiobooks

The full book's progress is tracked, and chapters are clearly shown

Your library just got a whole lot bigger! Music Assistant now has native support for podcasts and audiobooks. For podcasts, several providers have been added, including Subsonic, YouTube, and RSS feeds. Audiobooks can be added via two brand new providers: Audible and Audiobookshelf, or imported directly from your local files. Audiobook playback presents the entire book as a single bar with dots showing each chapter (even if the book is separated into multiple files), allowing you to really track your progress. The entire core has been adjusted to keep better track of your progress through any media, so you will always resume where you left off.

The "Continue listening" section on the home page takes you back to where you left off

”New Sensation”

More players and providers

Shortly after our last blog post, we added support for Apple Music which was one of the most requested additions in the comments. A couple of other new providers were added, including iBroadcast and SiriusXM. For new hardware support we’ve added support for Bluesound players. If you have a provider or player you love and want to see it in Music Assistant, request it---but better yet join us in developing it!

”All About That Bass”

Equalizer control & features

Make your own EQ settings or import pre-made settings for your speaker

When we released 2.0 there were basic bass and treble controls for devices, but with our new configurable DSP (Digital Signal Processor) you can now fine-tune your audio like never before. This includes input and output gain, along with a powerful parametric equalizer that can be applied per player 📈. You can conveniently view the entire audio pipeline by clicking the quality indicator icon.

Another useful feature added was a “Don’t stop the music” mode that keeps music playing even once your queue finishes, playing similar songs from your library. Another way to keep the music playing is through lock screens and widget controls built into many popular operating systems, which can now control Music Assistant.

”Master of Puppets”

Home Assistant improvements

Home Assistant was always designed to work seamlessly with Music Assistant, and it’s only getting better. In the Home Assistant 2024.12 release, we gave the community a Christmas present—Music Assistant moved from HACS to being a native integration (please migrate if you haven’t yet).

Many people now add all their players to Music Assistant first and then integrate Music Assistant with Home Assistant, eliminating the need to add each device separately. The most recent release added the ability to outsource any player control, including volume or turning it on/off, to a Home Assistant entity. There are other benefits to using them together, like Music Assistant resuming audio playback after an announcement or using Assist to find and play a song (with or without LLMs).

”D-D-Don’t Don’t Stop the Beat”

More stable streaming

One of the biggest goals for every release is to improve streaming stability across all providers and players. With every release, we’ve been improving stability, and since our last post, we’ve had a big influx of users who have been finding and helping squash bugs. There have been nice improvements to almost every provider helping with stability, speed, and quality. Just in the next patch release 2.4.3, we’ve improved streaming performance on slower network connections. The goal is that the music never stops.

”Praise You” - 🙏

A huge thank you to everyone who contributed to this release---whether through code, testing, or feedback. Your support keeps Music Assistant evolving into the ultimate tool for managing your music, on your players.

”Drop It Like It’s Hot”

What began as a quick script, to sync my playlists so I could switch between streaming providers, grew into a beast on its own.

Music Assistant is what I'd like to call a "music library manager" – it gives you full control of playing YOUR music on your players. Just like Home Assistant centralizes all your devices and services to work together, Music Assistant does the same with your music sources and smart audio-playing devices.

What began as a quick script, to sync my playlists so I could switch between streaming providers, grew into a beast on its own.

Music Assistant is what I’d like to call a “music library manager” – it gives you full control of playing YOUR music on your players. Just like Home Assistant centralizes all your devices and services to work together, Music Assistant does the same with your music sources and smart audio-playing devices.

To just play with Music Assistant without reading what it is (yes, we know you!):

Rainbow Connection

What is Music Assistant?

Your music, your players. Click and play. It should be as simple as that.

From source to Music Assistant to speaker

Connect and play anywhere

Music Assistant allows you to quickly connect some of the most popular streaming providers like Spotify and Tidal, with your local media files. Importing your liked tracks, artists, albums, and playlists, all displayed with the correct artwork.

It supports the most ubiquitous streaming protocols and devices like Airplay, Cast and DLNA, letting you play media on almost any device - if an old speaker doesn’t support new services, Music Assistant can bring it back to life.

Your local and cloud libraries will be seamlessly merged together. If you have the same track on multiple place, it will appear once while helping you find the highest-quality version. You can even have multiple accounts from the same provider, allowing everyone in the house to have their playlists in one place.

It can group supported players for synchronized playback. It also supports advanced playback features such as crossfade and volume normalization - regardless of whether the device supports them.

How to install Music Assistant

After many years of development and testing with the amazing community, we can finally say this is ready for daily use.

Even though Music Assistant is an HA Add-on, it can be installed from start to finish via HACS. You simply install the integration, which will automatically install and manage the add-on for you. The integration allows you to control your devices with automations and voice control.

Music Assistant is distributed as a Home Assistant add-on – our way to easily extend your Home Assistant installation with third party applications. To install it as a Docker container, follow the MA installation instructions.

Fight the power

Why Music Assistant?

I started Music Assistant out of frustration about the mainstream available options;

You buy into an all-in-one ecosystem (such as Sonos), and then it’s up to that ecosystem to decide which music sources to support now and in the future.

You choose a music streaming provider, and then somehow that streaming provider decides where/how you play their music.

You want to switch between streaming providers and keep your carefully curated playlists, regardless of which provider you want to play it with.

You still have your CD music collection that you’ve painstakingly ripped into high-quality files on local storage, and you want to play them, maybe even mix them with choices from streaming providers.

Or maybe you fall into the category of users who don’t want any subscriptions and have a carefully curated local media collection you want to play on these shiny new playback devices.

When we pay for our music or devices, we shouldn’t be limited by arbitrary limitations. We are slowly moving into a world of greater walled gardens and more vendor lock-in, and it’s time we took back control.

Tidal on a Google Home

I spent a long time and a good bit of my money looking at existing solutions to fill these gaps. They were either expensive, closed, or lacked the home approval factor - or a combination of all of these.

Freedom of choice

Connecting any sources and play anywhere

Music Assistant connects to your favorite streaming providers and local music files, letting you play them on almost any connected playback equipment from the past 20 years. It’s basically a translator of music protocol A towards speaker/player protocol B.

For instance, I have a traditional amplifier + speakers setup in my living room that allows for high-quality music playback, where I can sit down and hear every detail. I also have Sonos speakers in a very noisy kitchen and some DIY speakers that can only accept Airplay. I can play my music to all of these speakers without being tied down to any single ecosystem.

Some people might say that the best way to prevent all that frustration is by buying into an ecosystem like Sonos which takes care of this for you entirely. While I am a big fan of Sonos (and I will recommend them to friends and family for ease of use), I am not a big fan of the vendor lock-in that comes with it. If Sonos or a streaming service decide to part ways, I don’t have to be locked out of my music. Also, they don’t make speakers at every price point, meaning you don’t get the advantages of the new higher-fidelity or more affordable hardware out there.

Come together

Unifying all your music in one library

In the same interface as I can stream my kids’ music to their speakers, I can stream my Hi-Res favorites to my high-fidelity setup. It is an all-in-one interface. Gone are the days of needing five different apps to get playback going in multiple parts of the house or switching who is connected just to access their playlists.

When you search in Music Assistant, it searches all your libraries. Every streaming service, or the local files you add, are available to choose for playback.

We are family

Built for Home Assistant

Music Assistant has always been closely linked to Home Assistant (more on that below). I now even work for Nabu Casa, partly because of my work on Music Assistant (but now I’m the Matter guy).

Because of this strong link, Home Assistant seamlessly links with Music Assistant, unlocking several advanced features. MA players are exposed to HA and can be controlled via your dashboards, automations, and scripts. This allows HA users to control their music players and access MA’s powerful music search function. Players can provide TTS (Text-to-Speech) announcements and can be controlled by Home Assistant connected voice assistants.

Liner notes

So, I started working on Music Assistant exactly five years ago, at first for my own personal use. It started as a learning exercise - thanks to it, I learned asyncio Python programming as well as the Vue frontend framework. I had the project on GitHub just to host the code, but it was not really meant to be used by others.

At some point, it became clear to me that there was a real demand, and I posted some info on how to install it, which gained a little attention. In June 2022, we released the 1.0 version of Music Assistant, and it was still in rough shape but already suitable for many users. We even organized a Livestream, “Let’s get Loud” hosted by Home Assistant, to promote audio support for ESPHome and the super cool things you can build when you combine these three open-source projects.

Version 1.0 was not everything we hoped it would be. It had some structural bugs, specifically running as a custom component in Home Assistant. HA was created to give you the best experience for automating your home; it was never optimized for real-time audio streaming. On top of that, at some point, the dependencies of both projects got so conflicted that Music Assistant stopped working completely in the March 2023 release of HA.

Six months after its initial version 1.0 launch, the project was beginning to look like it was going to die, so I decided to start over and go back to the drawing board. The engine of MA needed to be its own isolated component, responsible for giving you the best possible experience of streaming music (where audio quality and latency are very important), and the HA-side should be responsible for automating your house and music.

So, the Music Assistant Server was born. It is a standalone application that you can run in docker (or Home Assistant add-on), all connected to HA via a HACS integration. The project was split up into multiple self-contained parts.

Music Assistant Server has its own web interface, a modern interface written in Vue. Thanks to HA’s add-on system, this web interface can be securely accessed from HA. The web interface is a Progressive Web App (PWA), so you can also visit it directly and install it on your device. We also have an (experimental) desktop app.

Over the past year, we have been iterating on this with an impressive number of beta testers. So, while technically this is a 2.0 release, to me personally this is the first real release, as this is finally something that feels good and has the right foundation. What is also super is that we attracted contributors to the project, folks helping create and maintain music integrations while providing support or translations. Even more exciting there are some really big features and streaming services on the horizon. My sincere thanks to everyone who has helped bring this release home.
